R. Pearson's Pasteur, Plagiarist, Imposter, originally published in 1942, serves as the introduction. It details some of the reasons for the rancorous relationship between Louis Pasteur and Antoine Béchamp. Pearson points out many of the problems in Pasteur's work, and provides details, statistics and evidence to support his case. Some of the frauds which were eventually admitted by the Pasteur Institute are mentioned here.

It contains the evidence of the false grounds on which the germ theory of disease was elevated to its current status as a dogma, and beyond question. Here is a pioneeering account of everyday life under Stalin, written by one of our foremost authorities on modern Russain history. Focusing on urban areas in the 1930's, Sheila Fitzpatrick shows that with the adoption of collectivisation and the first Five Year Plan, everyday life was utterly transformed. with the abolition of the market, shortages of food, clothing, and all kinds of consumer goods became endemic. As peasants fled the collectivised villages, major cities were soon in the grip of a major housing crisis, with families jammed for decades into tiny single rooms in communal appartments, counting living space in square metres. It was a world of overcrowding, privation, endless queues, and broken families, in which the regime's promise of future socialist abundance rand hollowly. We read of a government bureaucracy that often turned everyday life into a nightmare, and of the ways that ordinary citizens tried to circumvent it, primarily by patronage and the ubiquitous system of personal connections known as "blat". And we read of the police surveillance that was endemic to this society, and the waves of terror like the Great Purges of 1937, that periodically cast this world into turmoil. Fitzpatrick illuminates the ways that Soviet city-dwellers coped with this world, examining such diverse activities as shoppping, travelling, telling jokes, finding an apartment, getting an education, cultivating patrons and connections, marrying and raising a family, writing complaints and denunciations, voting, and trying to steer clear of the secret police.
Based on extensive research in the Soviet archives only recently opened to historians, this superb book illuminates the ways ordinary people tried to live normal lives under extraordinary circumstances.

Autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) is a special type of chronic pancreatitis (CP), which displays clinical, morphological, serological, radiological and in particular histological features that are distinct from those of other types of CP. CP can cause pancreatic diabetes mellitus (DM). The pathomechanism and clinical features of pancreatic DM differ from those of types 1 and 2 DM, and the principles of its treatment may also differ. Our aims were to assess the characteristics of AIP cases in Hungary; to assess the presence of AIP in various systemic autoimmune diseases (SAIDs) and to evaluate the effectivity of insulin therapy in patients with pancreatic DM. The presented three clinical studies have demonstrated that AIP is present and increasingly recognized in the Hungarian population. Our second study allowed the conclusion that the serum IgG4 level may be elevated in SAIDs, but as a consequence of the concomitant SAID rather than of AIP. The determina¬tion of serum IgG4 does not seem to be suitable for the differentiation between IgG4-related diseases and SAIDs. The third study suggested that oral medication may become insufficient early in pancreatic DM.

In 1942 a Catalina crew of 210 Squadron, based at Sullom Voe in the Shetlands, was selected to carry out a series of highly secret operations, including a flight to the North Pole. The sorties were associated with a Norwegian expedition from Britain to Spitsbergen, to deny the use of the territory to the enemy. The flights made by the crew were frequently over twenty-four hours in length and reached the limits of human endurance, in conditions of extreme cold. Later, the squadron was detached to North Russia, to provide cover for the convoys taking vital supplies to the Allies on the Eastern Front.
The navigator of the crew, Ernest Schofield, retained logs of most of these sorties. Together with other survivors of the crew, accounts from German sources and research carried out by Roy Conyers Nesbit, he recreated these little-known events, in detailed and accurate narrative that ends in tragedy.
